Mission

Our Mission is to encourage young people of color, specifically Black and African American, to join the aquatic sciences. Many don't realize the numerous science opportunities available involving our ocean. About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered and only 5% has been explored. We are creating the consistent support to allow youth to make a positive difference for our planet.

Goals

Our goal is to supply information about different scientific opportunities. We will use our pillars of community, mentorship, and education, to guide students into their desired field while presenting them opportunities to excel. Success is more achievable when you know you are not alone.

01.
Community

Instill a sense of community to ensure every young scientist is supported throughout their scientific journey and knows they are not alone.

02.
Mentorship

Enlighten and guide young scientists who are still learning academic and industry pathways.

03.
programs

Illuminate the many areas in which young scientists shine by supporting and encouraging the aquatic sciences especially in higher educational systems.

04.
education

Inform young scientists about different research opportunities and resources for financial assistance.

"Science is not a boy's game, it's not a girl's game. It's everyone's game. It's about where we are and where we're going."

History

Over the years, African Americans, specifically African American women, have overcome the hinderances to do basic actions like vote, work ,and learn. African American women have consistently exceeded the low expectations set for them. Our organization wants to break the stereotypes that devalue our abilities like "Black people can't swim" and "A woman belongs in the house". We are more than enough and capable of achieving our highest goals.

Mahogany Mermaids® was created in August 2016. After completing a pre-PhD program in the summer of 2016, our CEO, Aliyah Griffith, became concerned about the lack of women of color in STEM, particularly in the aquatic sciences. With the help of her mentor, family, and a few other HBCU students, Mahogany Mermaids was born. Over the past few years, the organization has gained volunteers and support from across the country. Through social media, traditional outreach and partnerships with similar-valued organizations, Mahogany Mermaids® is creating a safe space to inspire people of color in STEM to get active and excited about the aquatic field.
